Get in Sync With Daylight Saving Time This Spring

Spring forward with ease this March

 Spring Forward Daylight Saving

From household chores and backyard projects to family vacations and outdoor activities, spring is a time for people everywhere to look forward as the winter season thaws. It also marks an important turning point for the year: the start of Daylight Saving Time (DST).

On Sunday, March 11 at 2 a.m. local time, clocks will skip ahead one hour (to 3 a.m.) to begin Daylight Saving Time. This change will remain in effect until Daylight Saving Time ends for the year on November 4, 2018.

Keeping timer controls in sync during this period is simple and easy as long as you plan ahead. Whether you’re a distributor, contractor, customer or homeowner, keep these points in mind when setting your clocks and timer controls forward this March.

When Does Daylight Saving Time Take Effect?

In nearly every state in the U.S. and Canada, Daylight Saving Time begins the second Sunday in March and ends the first Sunday in November. Hawaii and certain parts of Arizona are excluded. Several other countries, including much of Europe and the United Kingdom, follow similar schedules with slight variances based on locale.

Mexico adopted Horario de verano nationwide in 1996 because of its increasing economic ties to the United States.

Though Daylight Saving Time sets the standard for business and government, it's not to be confused with astronomic timing. Unlike Daylight Saving Time, which is adjusted twice a year, astronomic timing continuously adjusts ON/OFF times based on approximate latitude and date to mirror sunset and sunrise times. The two schedule formats are usually suited for different applications but can also be used concurrently.

What Systems Do I Need to Update?

In addition to updating the wall clocks and displays throughout your office, school, facility or home, it's important to be mindful of controls and systems that are tuned to a time-based reference point.

The good news is that many popular Intermatic controls, such as the ST01, EJ600 and talento smart™, will adjust automatically to the time change. However, timers that include a DST feature but were manufactured before January 1, 2007 may still require manual adjustment. Mechanical timer controls will also need to be adjusted manually.

Start by going over your day-to-day operations and think through where you might need to update or verify time settings. For example, do exterior safety lights operate on a 7-day schedule? Are outdoor sprinklers set on the appropriate schedule? Do batteries need to be changed?

Though it may seem like an extra chore, it will ensure lights and appliances stay on when they need to be and keep you on schedule heading into spring.

Additional Resources

In addition to the information found in each timer control’s user manual, we’ve assembled a few quick reference guides for making manual adjustments during the time change, if needed.
